Mentoring at Leeds Beckett University

Elizabeth Shaduwa and Nicola May have recently enrolled in a Mentor Scheme in association with Leeds Beckett University.

The Scheme is intended for Students who are looking for help with pursuing their legal careers. The Mentees are allocated a Mentor who is already established in the legal industry and who can offer valuable insight to the Mentee on an informal basis.

Elizabeth and Nicola attended the opening evening last Wednesday to meet their Mentees. Elizabeth was been allocated 1 Mentee who is a Student studying Law in their third Year at University and Nicola was allocated 2 Mentees in their second and third Year. The Mentors’ roles will include meeting with the Mentee and supporting them with progressing their legal careers.

At the Event, Elizabeth met with her Mentee to discuss what she wanted to achieve from the Scheme and explored how Elizabeth and Milners could assist her to achieve her goals. Moving forward, Elizabeth agreed that they would meet on a regular basis and begin looking at the Mentee’s career post University. Elizabeth spent time speaking with the Mentee to get know her and to find out what was important to her so we could consider the right types of roles and firms that she would be looking to make an application to.

The Scheme is a longstanding scheme and Elizabeth (now 9 years’ PQE) enrolled when she was undertaking her studies. Elizabeth said “the Scheme is really helpful as it gives guidance to Students who may be lost as to what steps they need to be taking and when to ensure that they secure suitable roles when they have finished their studies. Milners understands that the decisions taken early on can impact hugely on future success in the legal world and we are committed to helping budding legal minds in progressing their career.”
